Tips on Using WiiM’s RoomFit Room EQ to Get the Best Results

  1. Open the WiiM app.
  2. Press the settings icon for the streamer you are using.
  3. Press RoomFit.
  4. Press the settings icon in the upper-right corner.
  5. Under Curve, select Harman.
  6. Under Equalize Options:
    • Set Freq: 30–300 Hz
    • Set Max Gain: 3.0 dB
    • Set Min Gain: -12.0 dB
    • Leave Max Q at 10.0
  7. If you are using your phone’s built-in microphone, leave Built-In Mic Compensation set to ON. If you are using an external calibrated microphone such as the UMIK-1, use the External Mic Calibration option instead and make sure the correct calibration file has been loaded before running RoomFit. Each UMIK-1 has its own serial-number-specific calibration file.
  8. With the UMIK-1, use the regular 0° calibration file and point the microphone forward toward the speakers, ideally toward the center point between them. If you choose to point the microphone straight up instead, use the corresponding 90° calibration file. The important thing is to match the calibration file to the microphone orientation.
  9. That said, because we are only using RoomFit to correct low-frequency room modes, where the microphone is effectively much more omnidirectional, microphone orientation is a secondary consideration.
  10. Press the upper-left arrow to exit.
  11. Press Run RoomFit.
  12. Keep pressing Next and following the instructions until you reach Select RoomFit Type.
  13. Confirm Dual Channel RoomFit is selected, then press Next.
  14. Press Start.
  15. Press Complete Correction.
  16. Press Save Profile.
  17. Press + New Profile.
  18. Name the profile Harman.

Now repeat the process, but at Step 13 select Individual Channel RoomFit. Save this profile as Harman 2.

Next, repeat the process using the B&K, Music, Auto, and Flat target curves. Create one Dual Channel RoomFit profile and one Individual Channel RoomFit profile for each, saving them as B&K and B&K 2Music and Music 2, and so on.

At this point, you will have ten RoomFit profiles with different amounts and characteristics of low-frequency output.

Now Comes the Fun Part: Compare the Profiles

  1. Go into the RoomFit menu and press Enable RoomFit to turn RoomFit off.
  2. Play a song with strong bass content that you know really well, or use a pink noise track. I recommend learning how to use pink noise in addition to familiar music because it can make differences between profiles easier and faster to identify. Put the track on repeat.
  3. Listen carefully and make a note of how the bass sounds relative to the mids and highs. This is your baseline.
  4. Press Enable RoomFit again to turn it back on. In most rooms, you should hear a significant improvement in the bass, with less boom and better definition. This can also change how you perceive the mids and highs, even though we have not EQ’d those frequencies.
  5. Switch between your saved profiles and make notes about what you hear.

In most rooms, the Harman profiles will have the most bass, followed by B&KMusic, and Auto. The Flat profiles will generally have the least bass. I do not recommend Flat for normal music listening, but it is useful as a reference because it makes it easy to hear how much bass emphasis the other target curves add after the major room modes have been corrected.

A Few Observations

When calibration is performed using Individual Channel RoomFit, with the calibration signal sent to each speaker separately and each speaker EQ’d independently, the result often has slightly more bass than Dual Channel RoomFit, where both speakers are measured and corrected together. This is normal and is why I suggest running each target curve both ways.

In most rooms, all of the profiles should sound significantly better than the uncorrected RoomFit disabled signal. From there, it is simply a matter of deciding which profile or profiles you prefer and deleting any you know you will not use.

There are no wrong answers here. It comes down to personal preference.

Once you have one or two RoomFit profiles that successfully address your major room modes, you can move over to the Graphic EQ settings and fine-tune the sound further.

Think of the two functions as serving different purposes:

RoomFit corrects the room response and provides the baseline for everything you listen to.

Graphic EQ sits on top of that baseline and lets you adjust the sound for particular recordings, genres, or personal preferences.

For example, I am a big fan of British rock, but I do not always enjoy the way many of those recordings are mixed, so I use the Graphic EQ to make my preferred adjustments for that type of music.

Again, there are no wrong answers. This is where personal preference takes over, and it is also one of the fun parts of the hobby. Experiment, listen, learn, and enjoy the process.

And if you ultimately prefer the sound without RoomFit, turn it off and continue enjoying your music that way.
